Hey, what's up, y'all? It's your boy, DJ Blaze, and today I'm gonna talk about one of my favorite rappers of all time: Redman. You know him, you love him, you've seen him smoke more weed than Snoop Dogg and Willie Nelson combined. He's the Funk Doctor Spock, the Reggie Noble, the Brick City Bomber. He's also one of the funniest dudes in hip-hop history, and I'm gonna prove it to you by revisiting his classic comedy movie: How High.
How High came out in 2001 and it starred Redman and his partner in rhyme, Method Man, as two stoners who get into Harvard University thanks to a magical strain of weed that lets them ace any test. The weed was grown from the ashes of their dead friend, Ivory, who appears as a ghost whenever they smoke it and gives them the answers. Sounds crazy, right? Well, it gets crazier.
The movie is full of hilarious scenes and lines that showcase Redman's comedic talent and charisma. He plays Jamal King, a streetwise hustler who doesn't give a damn about anything except getting high and having fun. He doesn't care about Harvard's rules or reputation, he just wants to party and make friends with everyone. He also has a crush on a beautiful girl named Lauren, who happens to be the daughter of the dean.
Some of my favorite moments from the movie are:
- When Jamal and Silas (Method Man) arrive at Harvard and see a bunch of nerds playing chess on the lawn. Jamal says: "Yo, this is some bullshit. They ain't got no bitches here. They got motherfuckers playing chess."
- When Jamal and Silas meet Bart (Chris Elwood), a rich snob who tries to act cool and impress them with his rap skills. He says: "Yo, yo, yo. What up, dawgs? I'm Bart. I'm tight with the faculty here. You know what I'm saying? I got mad flava. Check it out." He then proceeds to rap horribly and ends with: "Word to your mother."
- When Jamal and Silas go to their first class and meet their professor (Jeffrey Jones), who is an arrogant jerk who hates them. He says: "Welcome to Harvard. Where the students are smarter than you." Jamal replies: "And where the professors dress like pimps from the '70s."
- When Jamal and Silas get invited to a frat party by Bart and they decide to spike the punch with their weed. ssq
